| Even Fewer Bad Days at Kelly's |

It didn't make it into the current edition of the book, but the bigger and better Kelly's “No Bad Days” Cafe in downtown Napa will certainly be the second edition, if for no other reason than the toilets. OK, so the toilets are just one of the fun features of this eclectic and cosy restaurant. You should also expect a small but well-executed seasonal menu of Californian dishes peppered with international influences (main courses $18-28), a colorful and mismatched interior usually bustling with locals on a first-name basis, and plenty of adult entertainment plastered to the walls. Which brings me back to the toilets (not that I usually hang out in toilets). The “wallpaper” in the little boys and girls room is definitely not for little boys or girls, but should be plenty entertaining for adults who have already imbibed the best part of a bottle from the wine list. That wine list, incidentally, is compact but includes some unusual wines from small local producers, as would be expected in a place owned by a member of the Spottswoode Winery clan. Corkage is the valley-standard $15. And if you don’t deduce owner Kelly Novak’s vehicular preferences by the end of your meal, whether from the hints on the toilet wall or the bottom of the menu, there’s a final, big hint in the form of a basket of free stickers you can pick up on your way. They rather succinctly express the desire that all gas-guzzling Hummers be wiped off the face of the planet. After emerging from Kelly’s place onto the deserted, somewhat forlorn streets of downtown Napa, you’ll understand why she called it the No Bad Days Café. You can’t help but have fun in there, both from a culinary and scatalogical point of view (976 Pearl St., at First St., Napa. 707/258-9666, Lunch Tues.-Fri, Dinner Tues.-Sat.)
